Desert Point Surfing Information

A scenically spectacular
highway follows the inside coast of the foot-like
southwest peninsula of Lombok. This road skirt
beaches of the whitest sand. Bay of turquoise water
and many small islands (Gili) characterize the
offshore panoramas. Those small islands (Gilis)
among others are : Gili Asahan, Rengit, Layar, Gede,
Anyaran, Amben, Lontar, Genting, Poh, Nanggu,
Tangkong, Sudak.
Take the road to the Bangko-bangko area that
includes world famous Desert Point surf location
considered by many to be the best left breaking wave
in Indonesia. Also go for hikes on the headland and
explore the caves and huge canons - a legacy of the
Japanese occupatio
Lombok's
best known wave is Desert Point, widely regarded as
one of the best and heaviest lefthand barrels in the
world. Desert Point, renowned as the feral mecca of
Indo, notoriously fickle, lies in a remote
mountainous region on the SW coast of Lombok and is
best accessed by boat. Lombok is lesser known for
its plethora of more innocuous, fun waves scattered
along its W and S facing coasts - some of which are
very difficult to find and reach, but the process of
discovery can be an experience to never forget.
Lombok is an easy escape from the severe crowds of
Bali and for those surfers seeking a greater variety
of setups including rights, pointbreaks, beginner
and intermediate level waves (in contrast to Padang
Padang, Uluwatu, Kuta Reef, etc…).
During
the dry season (May – October), the tradewinds blow
from the southeast providing offshore winds for
Desert Point as well as many of the left-hand waves
on the island. Alternately, the winds in the wet
season (November – April), blow from the southwest,
which results in more right breaks with offshore
conditions such as Air Guling. Water temperatures
are in the mid 70’s, but a vest or springsuit can
come in handy on windy days. The sun is directly
overhead this close to the equator so lots of
sunscreen and rashguards are highly recommended.
DESERT
POINT - This wave is also known as Bangko-Bangko
and has established itself as a top surfing point.
It is a full day out as it takes around 2/2.5 hrs to
travel to. This left-hander has a fast inside
section, with a shifty take-off area, it barrels and
walls along the reef, a long ride. Best on mid-tide.
The surf is best
from May to October but Lombok has surf all year
round, with many different breaks around the island.
Desert Point - a long barreling left hander. On its
day is rated as one of the world's best lefts.
Lombok south coast - excellent left and right
breaks, depending on conditions.
